I have concerns like we all do about the direction of Linden Labs, I have my own projects, dreams and work like you might have if you're a Second Life resident along with your own SL dreams and your inSL businesses, so I really feel I need to say this because I feel if I don't I will regret it, when we end up with another M Linden I will have something to point to with a date that shows I knew that other path, we can't afford just another political illusion or "bad" guy clean up pawn who's some part of the board of directors master plan.
There not that evil but they are still outside the norm of Second Life social situations, and I'm not fully sure what Prokofy is trying to do in general but I'm guessing she wants the decision making behind closed doors to be more relevant to the community, and not just another tick in a box to fleece a few lindens into the share holders pockets.
I would have thought she would be blogging extensively about getting a new CEO, and instead shes pushing to get someone from the community or someone who supports the community or just writes some tech blog onto the board? which is irreverent, because I don't see how anyone without money or a serious investment in Linden Labs can get on the board of directors.
It's like an old boys club, they ain't going to let just anyone in. And even if the person she wants has amassed enough credibility, no board member in their right mind would risk having someone new on the board who will upset the balance of power of their internal business wrangles, the board of directors is all about money and looks out for the shareholders and company as a whole as far as I am aware, so who's really going to let some guy Prokofy touted on the board?
Now If we're talking new CEO well is all nice and well to pick someone who uses Second Life and maybe turns over a small profit with some inSL content business and generally supports it with all their heart, but if Philip brings anyone in who is emerged in Second Life as a culture or has been extensively emerged in the past it's just asking for trouble and failure.
It just wont work out long term because that's an illusion Philip Linden would be creating by pushing someone he and the community thinks has the ability to meet the goals they support and think will help fix Second Life, but only because they look more politically and socially positive after M Linden.
You have to be picky and choose a CEO correctly. But actually these kind of people are stuck with a one sided over view of what a Virtual World is, because they love Second Life as it is or as it was and don't know how to apply new ideas that can appeal to more people and generally have no one to back them up, like M Linden he might have brought in some of his ex-staff but they where marketing industry and not anything remotely good for Second Life judging by the abysmal marketing strategy over the last 6 months plus.
So if you push anyone from the community ex-Linden or current Linden or some obscure "in" with the social club guy/girl into a position like that you end up with them bringing in more Second Life people who they like, but don't have a clue what to do beyond running sims or how to even engage Second Life residents or develop Linden Labs as a corporation so it moves to the next stage.
A perpetual cycle of failure. Put simply these people who think they are someone in Second Life, or on Tech blogs and people like me generally are no one, they have no major contacts within the similar relevant industry behind Second Life or in other virtual worlds, Twitter following some CEOs of other virtual worlds don't count neater does being a facebook friend who "likes" everything they do.
They might have done some inSL business or blogged some ideas or perhaps met some industry names in passing, but I very much doubt they can match the guys resume and experience I have in mind.
Of course there are many professors and faux "CEO"s, odd professional people from all walks of industry, inSL but none of them would be able to seamlessly move from corporate board setting and major industry into the virtual industry and economy built by content creators and visionaries and have a clue what was going on, at every level or even understand every dynamic of what people actually do who work at Linden Labs, let alone how to manage it all.
I don't know who this GOD is the "Dusan" Prokofy is touting, perhaps it's the Metanomics guy who's regular talk I lost interest in more than year ago, but even if as she or her commenter's say he "
has a broad network", I very much doubt he would be able to back himself up or put his ideas to work, though a new CEO without some majorly experienced staff who have the knowledge to get Linden Labs moving in the right direction.
They have just lost over 100 experienced staff in cuts so please don't attempt to join any group that touts someone from the Second Life community or Ex-Linden as ideal for a position of relevance "CEO", because you think hes "looks" politically better than M linden and suits your goals, because you just end up trying to stick a plaster over an all ready sore scab.
But of course supporting a perpetual cycle of failure is your choice, which I would never wish to take away from you.
I think perhaps blog wise I live under a Second Life rock in certain terms, I don't visit as many blogs as I should do but I generally feel I have a good enough over view and visionary idea to put a name out there.
So like with so many sayings put simply "don't over look people who are right under your nose", have more than ample relevant experience, and can come with an existing community/fans/artists social network and circle of influence of up to 100 thousand+ waiting to be engaged with Second Life when professional grade mesh and what ever dream development Second Life turns into arrives.
The gentleman in question was one of the founding partners of DAZ3D, a developer and broker of 3D graphics software and content, who Second Life is recently engaged with under contract for the development of mesh.
His company was previously engaged with Linden Labs for the attempted redevelopment and upgrade of the avatar mesh, but due to Philips internal ball dropping Linden Labs failed to maintain contact with them to complete the process, though this time things are different as most of those previous Lindens who where new to the industry as a whole ain't around anymore.
I believe the man we as a community and the board of directors is looking for is Chris Creek, a logical choice for the board of directors and an inspiring choice for the community at large, His resume has many of the elements a Second Life CEO should express, and his love of art and 3D content is unparalleled.
With the backing of Dan Farr acting CEO of DAZ3D he would have the team and power to push Second Life to the next stage, he and DAZ in general have an industry understanding unparalleled by many other company's of many virtual worlds and insider knowledge, they know how to translate art and 3D content into a social network situation, as they did with "www.artzone.com" while maintaining the ability to sell content and turn over profit, which has been an important issue to in world content creators who depend on the Second Life economy.
His company has been actively involved in contracts of support and development for such worlds as Blue Mars and Electric Sheep, this is the guy who has the time and the rock solid team though DAZ3D who could fully back him up and I think could bring Second Life back from the brink and into an industry changer virtual world once again.
So if you like me think Chris is the man for the job, then tell Philip and any other Linden you come across, to go get Chris Creek from DAZ3D.
This post might be updated at my discretion, and I OBJECTION! at any complaints if I do.
